Debate “What do we need other cultures for here?” after the film “Paa Joe and The Lion”
Today, Ashong is the most famous representative of the Ghanaian tradition of fantasy coffins which has been cultivated since the 50s. His pieces were ordered by American presidents and celebrities. The world’s top museums have them in their collections, however most are several meters underground. The film is an ethnographic and spiritual trip as well as a confrontation between traditional beliefs or varied practices of the inhabitants of Ghana in Africa and the unified European culture.
Together with our guests we will reflect on how to translate this confrontation into a significant and inspiring dialogue or how to get to know and learn about foreign cultures. What do we expect from “ethno” and ethnography today, when everyone can be a traveller?
The debate’s participants:
Piotr Pucyło – artistic director of the Globaltica World Cultures Festival.
Waldemar Elwart – curator of the Ethnographic Department of the National Museum in Gdańsk
Marta Siciarek – president of the Immigrant Support Centre association
Agnieszka Olzacka – project manager at a Youth Cooperatio Centre in Gdynia. Among others, as a part of the project, she coordinates European Voluntary Service financed by the Erasmus+ Programme.
