Debate: “How to protect the environment without leaving home?” after the film “Silas”
Partner: WWF, Greenpeace
Silas Siakor, the protagonist of the film “Silas” after which the debate with WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) specialists will be held, is a Liberian activist who is very devoted to working for the local community. He tries to prevent cutting down forests for palm plantations and exposes corruption on a high level. Silas is brave and determined. Importantly, he can apply new technologies in his work too. During the meeting we will discuss forms of activism and things each of us can do for the environment – the Baltic Sea as well as local forests – and what we can do to support environmentalists’ activity.
The debate’s participants:
Wojciech Andrearczyk – environmental activist who cooperates with the WWF Poland foundation WWF Blue Patrol volunteer who has been engaged in the activities to save Baltic porpoise or removing ghost nets from the Baltic Sea. A co-founder of the group Local Group for Saving Wolves on the Elbląg Highland. Currently, he works on projects connected with giving up fossil fuels and switching to renewable energy sources or climate change.
Magda Figura – an inhabitant of Gdańsk who works on issues connected with biodiversity. Sustainable fishing and protecting the Arctic are other causes she has worked on. Currently, she is focusing on activities aiming at the establishment of a national park in the entire area of Białowieża Forest.
Marta Sobieska – co-coordinator of the local Greenpeace Tricity group as well as the Lovelasy Movement – www.lovelasy.org. She has been organising events for environmental protection, happenings, protests, marchers and photo ops. She promotes activism and encourages others to engage in activities which raise ecological awareness and actively opposes destruction of the nature around us. Her motto is: “Don’t wait for the change, be the change”.
